| 520 | 3 | |a Saint Bernard’s Letter 174, addressed to the canons of Lyon, in which he objects to the celebration and even to the very idea of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin, has long represented a difficulty for those seeking to reconcile this position with his reputation as a Marian saint. The present article seeks to discover his deepest motives for this opposition, examining not only the content of the letter itself, but also the context in which it was written. Juridical issues that come to light in Bernard’s correspondence with the church of Lyon during that period point to his concern having been largely a question of authority, in face of the introduction of a solemnity that as yet lacked Ecclesiastical approval. His own avowal of submission to the Church’s decision on the matter supports this explanation of his rejection of the celebration, and yet does not account for his denial of the proposed doctrine itself. It is, ultimately, an analysis of Bernard’s vision of the spiritual process of reading, to which he applies an analogy of incarnation, that provides insight into his difficulty with the idea of the Virgin’s sanctified conception, favouring that of her sanctification in the womb. Thus, his position in some way reveals his preoccupation with upholding Mary as the perfect model of reader, as developed in his spiritual writing. | |
