Guillaume était encore abbé bénédictin de Saint-Thierry, près de Reims, lorsqu'il écrivait le « De contemplando Deo » en 1119/1120. Il n'avait pas encore lié amitié avec saint Bernard de Clairvaux, dont l'influence sur lui serait décisive et l'amènerait à écrire, de façon d'ailleurs très personnelle...
